The Metro Milwaukee Sewerage District is the regional government agency that provides water reclamation and flood management services for about 1.1 million customers in 28 communities in the Greater Milwaukee Area.  MMSD serves 411 square miles that cover all, or segments of six watersheds.  Established by state law, the District is governed by 11 commissioners with taxing authority.  In addition to typical wastewater treatment responsibilities, MMSD also handles water quality research, household hazardous waste collection, pharmaceutical collection, industrial waste monitoring, laboratory services, planning and engineering services.  For more than 80 years it has it has processed wastewater into Milorganite, a fertilizer trusted by professionals for more than 80 years.  Today it is widely recognized for its focus on a wide range of green initiatives and technologies.
